For anyone who has ever been to Wichita, Kansas, they know that it is a historic city with a lot of character. One of the biggest parts of Wichita’s history is the Chisholm Trail. The Chisholm Trail was a trail used by cowboys to drive their cattle from Texas to Kansas. In Kansas, the cattle would be loaded onto trains and shipped all over the country.

The Chisholm Trail was named after Jesse Chisholm, who was a trader that helped create the trail. The trail started in Texas near San Antonio and ended in Abilene, Kansas. Wichita was not originally on the trail, but as the trail grew more popular, Wichita became a major stop for cowboys driving their cattle north.

A fantastic read

In 1867, there were only about 100 people living in Wichita. But by 1871, the population had grown to almost 2,000 thanks to the Chisholm Trail. At its peak, there were as many as 50,000 cattle being driven through Wichita each year. That’s a lot of cows!

The influx of cowboys and cattle made Wichita a very wild place. There were more than 60 saloons in Wichita at one time. And every Saturday night, there would be a big cowboy fight downtown. The fights would often start in one of the saloons and spill out into the streets.
